Can prophecy save us?

A review of George Shulman’s American Prophecy: Race and Redemption in American Political Culture, Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2008.

George Shulman’s American Prophecy: Race and Redemption in American Political Culture traces the intergenerational influences within a tradition of writing about white supremacy. He settles his attention on four authors who inflect the genre of prophecy differently according to the social context in which they write: Henry David Thoreau, Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. This excellent study, as rich and theoretically nuanced as it is direct and politically unyielding, sheds light on the various meanings of prophecy through extended close readings and historical analysis.
